Heart for the World

The Christian family at Family in Christ is committed to local, national, and international outreach. We hope as you grow in your walk of faith that you will take the risk to reach out beyond your world into another world, be it local or overseas, to help a person in physical, emotional or spiritual need. It’s a journey that rewards many times over the effort you put out!

Listed below are the major areas of emphasis where Family in Christ Church is working with the Lord Jesus in our community and around the world. If you feel led to help make a difference, if you have a “heart for the world” and want to take the next step, please read through these opportunities to serve and contact the corresponding Family in Christ to get involved.

wycliffe

Wycliffe Bible Translations

Today about 200 million people do not have the Bible in their own language. Wycliffe’s vision is to see the Bible accessible to all people in the language they understand best. Wycliffe also focuses on literacy development, community development and church partnerships.

Family in Christ has one Wycliffe-related effort, listed below:

FreysSusan and Brian Frey have just begun as missionaries with Wycliffe in Papua New Guinea.

You can read about their work by clicking on the blog link below.

frc

Beyond the Barriers

An outreach to the students of Front Range Community College (FRCC).

We asked the staff at FRCC: “What can we do for the students that you cannot do?” and “What are some of the barriers that students must overcome in order to get their degrees?”

The answer was that some of them just need a “cheerleader.” Others can’t afford books, have child care problems, need help testing into the basic Math class, or need conversation partners as they learn English.

angeltree

A Ministry of Prison Fellowship

Angel Tree is a ministry that reaches out to the children of prison inmates and their families with the love of Christ. At Christmastime, volunteers purchase and/or deliver gifts to the children of inmates in their parent’s name. Each gift delivery also presents an opportunity to share the love and hope of Christ with each family. Watch for the tree filled with Angels at Thanksgiving time!

Serving Opportunities at Family in Christ:

Kairos

Kairos Prison Ministry

Kairos is a body of ministries addressing the spiritual needs of incarcerated men and women, and those who work in the prison environment. Teams are needed 6-7 times each year to go into Sterling Men’s, Denver Women’s, and Brush-High Plains Women’s facilities. You must attend a Walk to Emmaus or equivalent weekend retreat first.

Compassion International

Compassion International is one of the nation’s largest Christian child sponsorship organizations, working with indigenous church partners in Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Sponsoring children in need is breaking the cycle of poverty. We celebrate Compassion Sunday each year in February, offering the opportunity for people to “adopt” a child through sponsorship. Over 100 children are presently being cared for by our church family!

Dear friend(s),

I’m not sure if my May 18 email actually made it to you. My laptop was acting up again. But now it seems to be working fine, for which I’m quite grateful. And my email files cleanup is going well. I still have about 1,000 old emails to go, about 3/4ths of them old.

Other reasons for gratitude:

I’m finally rid (mostly) of what my doctor calls “the San Diego County crud,” which is a viral infection that visits local inhabitants, often for 3-4 weeks. Chief symptom is a chronic bad cough that interferes with socialization and sleep. I had it for a little more than 3 weeks.

In times past I’ve usually gained weight through eating for comfort during times of feeling rotten. This time I didn’t, for which I thank the Lord! I’ve now lost 23 lbs since I started the South Beach Diet, and 33 since Oct 1. But I have another 45 lbs to go!

I’ve returned to the human race just in time to attend 3 events over the next several days:

The National Conference of ACMI (Association of Christians Ministering with Internationals), May 29-31, at Azusa Pacific University here in Southern California. I’m slated to help staff the ISI materials table. I’ll be staying with supporting cousins who live nearby.

The May 31 wedding of Josh Wyper, the son of one of my step-sisters, in Redlands CA. Daphne plans to take the train to Orange County so that we can rendezvous and attend together.

The June 1 concert of my third cousin Courtney Huffman at the U of So Cal. She will be singing her concert of American classical music, a concert that she’s slated to perform at Carnegie Hall in NY City later in June. She and her husband graciously support our ministry.

The Recruitment Dept has recently handed me 7 new staff candidates to coach through the get-acquainted modules process.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for your prayers!

Blessings,
Howard

Serving Opportunities at Family in Christ:

In late July a group of high school students and 2 adult leaders will be going to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. While there we will be doing either work projects (minor home improvements and painting) and/or kids club (a program of games, crafts, songs, and lessons designed to help kids learn about Jesus) for the Sicangu Lakota Sioux people. This reservation struggles with high unemployment (85%),
poverty, understaffed health care facilities, and rising suicide. An estimated 1 out of 3 residents on the reservation is homeless.

What members of Family in Christ can do:

  1. Pray that participants on this trip are able to make a difference in the life of the people on the reservation and that their lives would also be changed. Pray that Jesus would work in the hearts and minds of all the young people going that they would grow closer in their relationship with Jesus and with each other.
  2. Attend “The Love Boat” silent auction and dessert theater event on Friday, July 10th at Family in Christ and financially support this trip.
